Capsicum chinense 'Carolina Reaper'

Description

Guinness World Record holder 2013–2023 (officially measured at 1 569 300 SHU average, peak up to 2 200 000 SHU). Developed by Ed Curlin by crossing a Pakistani Naga with a Red Habanero. Distinctive wrinkled skin ('reaped' surface) and thin pointed tail. Flavour is fruity and sweet before the extreme delayed heat kicks in. Widely available as seeds and plants.

Superseded in unofficial testing by Pepper X (~3 180 000 SHU, also by Ed Curlin, GWR certified 2023) but Carolina Reaper remains the benchmark for extreme peppers.
